Academically distressed

The term “academically distressed” refers to students who have  been placed on academic probation at the beginning of the quarter because their cumulative GPA is below 2.0. If a student is able to raise the cumulative GPA to 2.0 by the end of the second probation quarter they will be returned to regular academic status. (Source: academic advising)

Admission type

At admission, students are classified as “freshman” or “transfer.” Freshman means that the students have been at UCSB since their first year. Transfer students come to UCSB with junior standing after transferring from another  4-year institution or community college. According to the 2020-2021 University Profile, 21% of incoming students were transferred during the 2020-21 academic year.

First generation

Students are categorized as “first generation” if neither parent/guardian has a degree from a 4-year institution. 37% of UCSB undergraduates are categorized as first generation students. Responses are provided by students when they apply to UCSB.

First language

This characteristic refers to students’ responses to the question, “What language is spoken at home?” There are three possible responses: “English,” “English and other,” and “Other.” Responses are provided by students when they apply to UCSB.

International Students

Students who travel from another country to receive education in the United States. According to the 2020-2021 University Profile, UCSB’s international students come from over 90 countries.

Repeating

The term “repeating” refers to students who have completed the course at least once before the current term. Students may repeat a course once if they received C- or below after their first attempt. Students may repeat a course more than once contingent on special approval from the dean.
