Why equity matters should be a question that every educator should be able to answer, and ensuring student success should be the shared goal that we all have in common.
Dr. Tia Brown McNair, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Student Success, Association of American Colleges and Universities

Student success starts with students. Learning more about who is in our classes is a first step to appreciating students' commitments and building an equitable community based in shared engagement.

DETAiL training helps faculty understand and use available institutional data to know more about equitable data use to support students in our classes.

Level 1

Level 1 training involves completing UCSB's required Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) training. FERPA provides protection for student educational records. FERPA training outlines for the UCSB community what data is collected by the university for what purposes, and how those data may and may not be used. With Level 1 training, DETAiL users have access to current-quarter demographic characteristics of:

  • UCSB students overall
  • Students enrolled in courses within the College of Letters and Science's Divisions of Humanities and Fine Arts; Math, Life, and Physical Sciences; and Social Sciences
  • Students in the College of Engineering.

To access Level 1 data, DETAiL users are expected to have completed FERPA training.

Level 2

Level 2 training involves joining a two-meeting, two hour workshop offered by the Center for Innovative Teaching, Research, and Learning. This training addresses interpreting demographic information included in DETAiL, issues with quantified data, and asset-based teaching. With level 2 training, DETAiL users have access to current-quarter demographic information about students in each course they teach.

Level 2 training sessions will begin in Spring of 2022. To learn more about Level 2 DETAiL training and be added the Level 2 DETAiL training list, please contact Dr. Maggie Safronova. At this time, we will be limiting training sessions to no more than 10 participants per quarter.

DETAiL Course-Specific (Level 2) Training

Course-specific (Level 2) training focuses on equity-minded use of data, including:

What characteristics are included? What not?

How do data visualizations shape considerations of equity?

What can quantified data tell us? What's left out?

What characteristics are aggregated in institutional data, and why?

How are characteristics defined, and by whom?

What can aggregated demographic data tell us? What's left out?

What data do you already have about students in your courses?

What research-based resources have you used to inform your teaching?

What more would you like to know, and how can DETAiL help provide insights or new questions?
